Cash or app: how the tip actually moves

At the window, there is usually a tip jar within arm's reach of the driver. Fold the bill, drop it in, done. Nobody announces it and nobody judges the amount. A tip that requires a separate conversation slows the lane. So the smoothest tip is the one that rides along with something you are already doing: cash with the cash payment, or the app tip screen right after you pay. Nothing performative is needed. The crew notices consistency more than size.

The regulars' playbook

If you go to the same stand most mornings, the crew will learn your order. Regulars who tip a dollar on a daily drink build real goodwill, and it shows in small ways: the drink made the way you like it without repeating the order, a heads-up when a seasonal you liked is back. This is not a transaction. It is just what happens when the same people see each other every day. You do not need to tip extra to get good service. But regulars tend to, because the relationship is real.

When a tip genuinely matters more

There are moments when a tip carries more weight than usual. A complicated order during the morning rush takes real work: multiple custom builds, alt milks, half-caf splits. The crew member making six modified drinks while the line wraps around the building earns that extra dollar. Bad weather counts too. The window crew works in whatever the sky is doing. A tip on a freezing morning or in driving rain is noticed. Holidays are the third one. If you are getting coffee on a holiday morning, the crew is working while most people are home.

What not to do

Do not feel pressured by the tip screen. It is a prompt, not an obligation, and the crew knows the difference. Do not apologise for not tipping. A quick "thanks" and a smile is plenty. Do not tip in coins unless that is genuinely all you have; it reads as an afterthought and it slows the count. And do not hand a tip to the wrong window in a double-lane stand. The tip goes to the stand that made your drink, which is the window you paid at.
